OVERVIEW:
Narcissism is a psychological disorder and according to recent research, it is drastically on the increase. Although narcissism is not a new concept, the term is often misused. The word “narcissist” is often used to describe people and very often not in the correct context. This course focuses on providing a better understanding of both the concept of narcissism and the concept of gaslighting. The course further focuses on the treatment available and the effectivity thereof. Lastly the course focuses on the victims of narcissism and gaslighting; their road to recovery and what to expect during the recovery process.
From an ethical perspective, this course focuses on various ethical aspects regarding the treatment of victims of narcissism. There is also a section that focuses on what the ethical treatment of patients entails, should the healthcare practitioner suffer from narcissism.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• Gain in-depth knowledge about what narcissism really is and how it influences a person’s behaviour.
• Learn to distinguish between the different types of narcissism and how recognise their symptoms.
• Learn about the various treatments available to treat narcissism and the effectivity thereof.
• Learn what gaslighting is, and the dangers of the use thereof.
• Learn how victims recover and what to expect during the recovery process.
• Gain insight into various ethical questions that may arise from assisting victims of narcissism and if the
• practitioner self is exhibiting narcissistic behaviour.
